Diary written by a woman named Rachel Wilmer, who traveled the Canal in 1834. Like many others, Rachel toured the Canal to see the marvelous sights, but sometimes danger lurked. Sometimes people caught disease or had accidents while traveling and working on the Canal. New York State Library

This is an engraving of The Lock. This image shows a packet boat in a lock and a gatekeeper preparing to close the lock gates. A team of horses or mules and their driver wait for the boat to "lock through," while another person secures the boat to a post with rope. This broadside (poster) was printed to advertise land for sale in north-central New York. Business people, called land speculators, bought large amounts of land and then tried to sell it to new settlers for a profit. New York State Library
