09/23/2003   Yorkshire Pioneer Teacher Wins State Archives Award

ALBANY -- The Board of Regents and the New York State Archives have selected Larry Slanovich, a teacher from the Yorkshire Pioneer Central School District, to receive the 2003 Bruce W. Dearstyne Annual Archives Award for Excellence in the Educational Use of Local Government Records by an Educator.

The award will be presented to Mr. Slanovich at a luncheon ceremony at the State Education Building in Albany on November 13, 2003. The Dearstyne award is named for a former member of the State Archives' staff who was a staunch advocate for using historical records in the classroom.

The award recognizes Slavonich's work using primary source materials to help students become engaged in historical research and to delve deeper into local, state, and national issues. It also commends his efforts to help students improve their performance by researching in local government records and integrating historical records with current technologies.

Previous winners of the Dearstyne Award include Marilou Abramshe of St. Columbanus School in Cortlandt Manor (2001), Sherry Tu of Liberty High School in New York City (2001), and Mary Borden/Ruth Shippee of the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES (2002).
