Overview of the Records

Administrative History

Under U.S. Public Law 92-255 Sect. 409, the Drug Abuse Office and Treatment Act (1972), New York State determined that the Narcotic Addiction Control Commission (NACC and predecessor of the Division of Substance Abuse Services), would monitor various methadone treatment programs throughout the state. The Office of Methadone and Pharmaceutical Control of NACC was charged with the task of auditing the pharmaceutical, medical, and rehabilitative aspects of the treatment programs.

Scope and Content Note

These files contain the reports of deaths of clients in various methadone treatment programs located throughout New York State. The reports provide a small, concentrated body pertaining to the medical histories of heroin addicts. The records include information about the patients such as the clinic numbers, date and place of death, cause of death and various other data regarding the circumstances of death. Additionally, these reports include case summaries, related memoranda and correspondence.
