Administrative History
In November 1979, at the direction of the New York State Olympic Task Force and the Lake Placid Organizing Committee, the Department of Commerce was given the primary responsibility of providing information services and hospitality facilities to spectators, business executives, dignitaries, and foreign officials visiting Lake Placid during the games. The basic components of the department's program were: Information and Hospitality; Business Center and Airport Reception; and Press and Public Relations on Behalf of New York State.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of correspondence (incoming and outgoing), memorandums, press releases, newspaper clippings, legislative proposals, reports, studies, published literature, brochures, photographs, and posters concerning the Department of Commerce's role in the hosting of the 1980 Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid, New York.
The records in this series are divided into two subseries: correspondence files and subject files. The correspondence files contain most of the types of records listed above and were generated by various Commerce Department personnel. The subject files appear to be those of Virginia Cairns-Callan who was designated as the department's representative. She was responsible for overseeing the department's duties as outlined by the Olympic Task Force.
