Overview of the Records

Administrative History

The Office for Local Government was established by Chapter 335 of the Laws of 1959. The main purpose of this office was to assist the governor in formulating policies to address the issues and problems of local government. Several chapters of the Laws of 1960 broadened the mandate of the office to include municipal police training (Chapter 320), and to assume the functions of the former Division of Safety (Chapter 321) and the State Board of Equalization and Assessment (Chapter 335). In 1975, the Office for Local Government was abolished (Chapter 464) and its functions were transferred to the Department of State, Division of Community Affairs.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of the administrative subject files of the Office for Local Government. The records document the activities of the office in carrying out its broad mandate of strengthening local government. Topics represented in the series include the creation and reorganization of the Office for Local Government; the Fire Prevention Code; laws such as the Executive Law, General Municipal Law, Town and Village Law, and the Volunteer Firefighters Benefit Law; and the drafting of constitutional amendments and articles such as the Home Rule Amendment.

Record types include incoming and outgoing correspondence from local government officials; text of codes, ordinances, and laws related to local government; publications; reports; drafts of constitutional amendments; and legal memorandums.
