Administrative History

The New York Public Transportation Safety Board, created in 1983, has broad authority to oversee and assure the safe operation of bus, subway, and commuter rail transportation in New York State. The board investigates accidents on any system that receives state mass transportation operating assistance; reviews and approves safety plans; studies critical transportation safety issues; and recommends new legislation. The board consists of the commissioner of transportation, who is chair, and six other members appointed by the governor and confirmed by the State Senate.

Records include correspondence, accident findings and reports, interviews, inspection reports, public hearing transcripts, and recommendations. Additionally, the case files contain information, including employment history, on public safety personnel involved in accidents investigated.
