Administrative History

The Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) monitors and regulates proprietary (for-profit) non-degree granting educational institutions in New York. Proprietary schools provide instruction in business and trade curricula. BPSS licenses schools, their directors and instructors; approves curricula and advertisements; and monitors, audits, and investigates school programs. BPSS conducts preliminary investigations of complaints against proprietary schools. If charges are serious, the Education Department's Office of Counsel does a thorough investigation of the school administration, curriculum, and finances. Major cases may be referred to the Department of Law for criminal prosecution.
