Scope and Content Note

This series contains records created by the Public Education Bureau staff related to the development and implementation of annual "Safe Summer" campaigns. The Safe Summer Program was developed to provide safe, drug and alcohol free activities for children while promoting awareness of the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. The Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services works closely with governmental units at all levels to assure such cooperative educational programming.

The series contains planning documents, distribution lists, evaluations by review board members, fiscal documents, contracts and related records, media plans, studies on the effectiveness of the campaign, correspondence from the public, scripts for radio announcements, copies of print publications, and camera-ready mechanicals. There are two audio cassette tapes and one reel to reel tape of public service radio announcements. The series also contains at least one 8 x 10" black and white photo and approximately 20 black and white and 36 color 3 x 3" to 4 x 6" photographs showing local agency implementations of the campaign. These photographs are sometimes reproduced in later publicity material.

The series also contains examples of promotional material and products used in the campaign such as caps, balloons, t-shirts, bumper stickers, posters, mugs, and frisbees.

18467-99: This accretion primarily contains correspondence and memoranda relating to budgeting of public education programs during 1983-1985. The files were created by the Division of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, and the majority of the correspondence is with the New York State Association of Councils on Alcoholism.
