Scope and Content Note

This series consists of incoming correspondence to the office of the commissioner and copies of the replies. The series documents the evolution and development of the commission's policies and its relationship with state and local government officials as well as private organizations concerned about the commission's mandate to determine a methodology and site for disposal of the state's low-level radioactive waste.

The correspondence documents such activities and topics as the development of site classification criteria, site certification, communications, draft regulations, development of quality assurance guidelines and techniques, and other issues concerning the selection of quality assurance guidelines and techniques, and other issues concerning the selection of method and site to deal with the state's low-level radioactive wastes. Correspondendents include private citizens, environmental organizations, various state legislators, local and federal government officials, staff of siting commissions, Citizen Advisory Committee members, National Regulatory Commission officials, and the staff of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, Department of Environmental Conservation, and Department of Health.

Most of the incoming correspondence has correspondence tracking system log sheets attached. Many of the sheets are marked "no outgoing letter." Much of the incoming correspondence consists solely of photocopies of printed mail-in postcards requesting additional information about the commission, copies of the commission's publications, and/or requests to participate in upcoming working sessions. A large amount of the correspondence was forwarded to the commission by the Executive Chamber.
