Scope and Content Note
This series documents certification of candidates for statewide and national office by the State Board of Election. Material contained in the series includes certifications of acceptance and declination of nomination; correspondence and legal documents related to challenges to and defenses of candidates' nominations; petitions to the State Supreme Court against judgments by the Secretary of State's determination and drawing of ballots; minutes of party nominating conventions; and related correspondence. Offices documented include U.S. President and Vice President, Electors of President and Vice-President, delegates to national conventions, U.S. Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Comptroller, Attorney General, and Justices of the State Supreme Court.
Although the political process described is routine, and most of the candidates documented are "regular," some individuals and the platforms they represent are unique for the historical period. Candidates and party leaders covered in the records include Eldridge Cleaver, Gerald Ford, Dick Gregory, Lyndon LaRouche, Eugene McCarthy, George McGovern, Sargent Shriver, and George Wallace.
The series also documents Dept. of State certifications of primary election canvasses for some years and county party committees' rules and officers.
20045-03: This accretion consists of presidential electors lists, presidential primary canvasses, supreme court nominations, statewide nominations for various offices, and statewide ballot proposals.
