20691-02: This accretion documents the cleanup of the former site of EAD Metallurgy, Inc. in the town of Tonawanda. EAD Metallurgy, Inc. operated ca. 1977 - 1983 and manufactured foil elements for smoke detectors. Americium-241, a radioactive substance contained in the elements, was released into the Town of Tonawanda sanitary sewer system resulting in contamination of sewer lines, sewage treatment plant, and landfill. The Bureau of Environmental Radiation Protection subsequently contracted the Town of Tonawanda to oversee the decontamination activities and hire appropriate subcontractors. The decontamination was largely carried out by Nuclear Energy Services, Inc.

20691-02: In July, 1995 the Dept. of Health, Center for Environmental Health certified that future use of the property would result in no radiological exposure above applicable guidelines established to protect members of the public and the environment. Records in this accretion include Bureau of Environmental Radiation Protection box numbers 449107 - 449115.
