Scope and Content Note

This series contains printed reports either submitted by the State Board of Charities to the Legislature, or by special committees to the Board of Charities. Reports by the board include legal proceedings against specific charities, statewide statistical analyses of charities, and copies of "The Quarterly Record: A Review of Charitable Work in New York State." Other reports contain recommendations by subcommittees and experts in the field on topics such as the blind, the insane, the treatment of resident aliens, and the view of charities in other nations.

Reports by special committees, which were appointed by the board, largely pertain to investigations of individual charities, relating to management, financial affairs, treatment of residents, disciplinary issues, and whether the charities were meeting their moral and ethical obligations. These reports would often be the preliminary investigation done before legal action was considered.
