Administrative History
Democrat Joseph Zaretzki represented part of New York County in the New York State Senate from 1948 to 1974. During his tenure, he served as Senate minority leader from 1957 to 1964 and again from 1966 to 1974. Zaretzki served as Senate majority leader during a brief interlude in 1965 when the Democratic Party took over a majority of seats in the house. Born March 9, 1900 in New York City, Zaretzki served in World War I and began practicing law following his graduation from Columbia Law School in 1924. He passed away on December 20, 1981 in New York City.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of Senator Joseph Zaretzki's file copies of reports submitted by a number of joint legislative committees (JLC), state commissions, and Senate standing committees. Committees and commissions represented include JLC to Study Revision of Corporation Laws; JLC on Matrimonial and Family Laws; JLC to Revise Banking Laws; JLC on Interstate Cooperation; JLC to Investigate the Administration of the Unemployment Insurance Law; JLC on Metropolitan and Regional Areas Study; JLC on Housing and Urban Development; JLC on Navigable Waters; JLC on Industrial Labor Conditions; Temporary State Commission on the Capital City; State Commission for Human Rights; Temporary State Commission of Investigation; Law Revision Commission; and Senate Standing Committee on Insurance for Investigation, Study and Research of Varying Fire Insurance Rates.
In addition to reports of the Law Revision Commission, the series contains the commission's specific recommendations regarding a significant number of pending bills. Reports and memorandums submitted to various committees by private organizations and individuals are also included. The series also contains minutes of public hearings of certain committees: Joint Assembly Motor Vehicles and Senate Motor Vehicles and Transportation Committees; JLC on Unemployment Insurance; and JLC to Study and Revise the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law.
