Administrative History
A 1954 Federal law authorized a White House Conference on Education "to consider and report to the President on significant and pressing problems in the field of education" in late 1955.
The law also provided funding for preliminary state conferences to bring together educators to discuss educational problems and make recommendations for the White House Conference. The New York State Committee for the White House Conference on Education conducted four regional meetings and a statewide meeting during 1955 in fulfillment of this mandate. The committee consisted of 35 members appointed by Governors Thomas E. Dewey and Averell Harriman. In addition to planning and conducting conference meetings, the committee considered basic education questions through the mechanism of subcommittees.
