Scope and Content Note

These are records of the activities of the Commissioners of the Canal Fund.

A law of 1817 established the canal fund and Commissioners and required the Commissioners to present to the legislature an annual report on the state of the fund. This series contains the first of these reports (1818), listing receipts and payments and explaining certain aspects of the report. The records also contain resolutions passed by the commissioners (1825) regarding tolls, contracts, and other matters and giving the date and names of the commissioners present at the meeting. There is also an acknowledgment from the Library of Congress (1874) for receipt from the commissioners of a copy of the "Annual Report of the Canal Commissioners of the State of New York."
