Scope and Content Note

This series consists of three registers, and correspondence from the Office of the Comptroller relating to the maintenance and repair of highways. The first register, dated 1902-1908, contains entries for monies expended by the State Engineer for the improvement and repair of public highways. Entries include the date of notification by the State Comptroller of county roads improved or repaired; the name or number of the road improved; the amount paid by the state for such improvements; and the date and amount of this sum refunded to the state by the county. This register has 200 pages (many of which are blank) and is not indexed.

The second and third registers (dated ca. 1907 and 1909 respectively) are concerned with taxes levied for the maintenance and repair of highways. Entries list the towns in each county and, for each town, the amount of taxes levied for the improvement of highways and the amount of state aid received for this purpose. These ledgers are not indexed. There is also one folder of incoming correspondence of the State Comptroller relating to the maintenance and repair of highways. This correspondence is dated from 1902 to 1908, and consists of letters, reports, memoranda, etc. from the State Engineer and Surveyor and from the clerks of the Boards of Supervisors of various counties.
