Scope and Content Note

This series consists of incoming correspondence of the Canal Auditor relating to financial matters - salaries, contracts, tolls, and so on. A few letters to the Canal Commissioners are found in the series, but it is unclear whether they were a part of this series originally. The letters are bundled by year, but the original labels are lost. The Office of the Canal Auditor was set up by Chap. 162, Laws of 1848, and abolished by Chap. 69, Laws of 1883.
