Scope and Content Note

The series consists of abstracts and accompanying vouchers of the commissioners appointed to build a new prison in the Town of Mount Pleasant; and similar documents for operation of the prison after it was built. There are also payrolls of prison employees and inventories of prison property. Construction and operation of the prison were authorized by Chapter 25 of the Laws of 1825. The Revised Statutes of 1829, Part 4, Chap. 3, Title 2, Article 1, Sections 41-45 required the prison agents to make reports to and settle accounts with the Comptroller.
