Scope and Content Note

Weekly statements of merchandise and produce shipped via the Erie Canal through the ports of New York, Albany, West Troy, and Waterford were submitted to the Comptroller by toll colectors at those places.

Statements give the quantities of merchandise (sugar, coffee, nails, iron, etc.) cleared to, and of produce (wheat, flour, ashes, beef, pork, etc.) left from the Erie and Champlain Canals. A law of 1826 required the toll collectors to make annual reports and such other reports as the Comptroller might specify.
