Petitions are numbered from 1 through 120 and concern: location of the Erie Canal Enlargement; construction of bridges, culverts, docks, and other structures; water power privileges; and all other matters under the authority of the Canal Commissioners.

The Canal Commissioners' powers and duties are spelled out in laws of 1816, 1817, and 1820. The original petitions to the Canal Commissioners appear to be lost, but a few may be found in Series #A1440.
