Scope and Content Note

The register contains accounts of school monies distributed to each county from the Common School Fund, 1826-1868; of monies distributed to academies from the Literature Fund, 1832-1868, and from the U.S. Deposit Fund, 1851-1868; of monies distributed to academies for the purchase of books, maps, globes, and scientific apparatus, and for education of common school teachers, scattered years; of monies distributed orphan asylums, 1847-1868, and to hospitals, 1851-1868.

The register presently consists of two disbound fragments which may have been part of the same volume originally; it appears that few, if any, pages are missing. Each entry gives the amount paid, date paid, and name of payee (treasurer of county or institution).

The Common School Fund was established by Chapter 66 of the Laws of 1805, and the Literature Fund by Chapter 38 of the Laws of 1792. Appropriations to academies for the books, maps, and apparatus were authorized by Chapter 140 of the Laws of 1834, and Chapter 536 of the Laws of 1851. Appropriations for hospitals and orphan asylums were made annually or bi-annually, and citations of the relevant laws are made in the register in every case. Appropriations to academies from the U.S. Deposit Fund were authorized by Chapter 536 of the Laws of 1851, and by several succeeding statutes. Appropriations for education of common school teachers were authorized by Chapter 241 of the Laws of 1834, and Chapter 174 of the Laws of 1849.
