Scope and Content Note

This series consists of receipts made out to various county treasurers and employees of New York State engaged in the distribution of laws pertaining to the collection of quit rents. The Comptroller was a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Land Office, and responsible for the sale of all lands for payment of delinquent state taxes.

The series consists largely of receipts for copies of laws relative to quit rents that were distributed by State agents. There are newspaper notices concerning these laws and the sale of lands. There are also receipts for monies received by these agents for the distribution of the laws. Each receipt lists the date, the name of the state agent and the signature of the person receiving the law, usually the City Clerk.
