Summary:

This series from the Comptroller's Office consists of maps depicting the number of acres of marsh, partial marsh, and swampland near Cayuga Lake. They usually depict one lot per township and are very detailed in their measurements. Also included is an assessment that includes land owner's name, number of lots and acres owned, price per acre, a brief description of the lots and subdivisions, the total number of acres of marsh, partial marsh, and swamp, and its total value.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of maps depicting the number of acres of marsh, partial marsh, and swamp land in the Townships of Lysander, Galen, Cato, Brutus, Junius and Camillus.

The maps were generated pursuant to a law of 1825 which provided for the draining of the Cayuga marshes and swamp land in the Valley of the Seneca River and above the Cayuga Lake. The maps were executed under the supervision of Ira Hopkins, Job Tyler, and John McFadden in 1825. They usually depict one lot per township and are very detailed in their measurements.

In addition to the maps there is an assessment of the value of the marshes and swamps that are to be drained dated August 1, 1825. The assessment provides the name of the owner of the land, number of lots owned, number of acres owned, price per acre, a brief description of the lots and subdivisions, the total number of acres of marsh, partial marsh, and swamp, and its total value. Like the maps, the assessment roll was authorized by the 1825 law and compiled by Hopkins, Tyler and McFadden.
