Scope and Content Note
This series consists of correspondence from various members of county boards of supervisors, tax assessors and county clerks directed to the Comptroller's Office regarding the assessment and/or collection of taxes throughout New York State.
The majority of the correspondence is of less than one page and deals mainly with: the meeting of deadlines for reports to the Comptroller's Office; the requesting of specific information which would facilitate the compiling of assessment rolls; the receipt of forms; or other detailed questions concerning the assessment of taxes. The records were generated as a result of the first tax assessment law of 1788 and its subsequent amendments.
