Scope and Content Note
This volume records the amounts of money deposited in the bank for salt duties paid to the state by private companies. The information recorded is the date, day the week ends, the bank into which the money was deposited, and weekly totals. These returns were submitted by the superintendent of the Onondaga Salt Springs to the Comptroller. The duties were collected in compliance with Chapter 90 of the Laws of 1797, which provided for the State to enter into leasing agreements with companies who wished to manufacture salt.
The State fixed the maximum price and required lessees to pay a duty to the State, which was accounted for by the Comptroller. There is no index, except for the first four pages of the volume that provide a brief record of payments to newspapers for advertisements of State business (1841). The list gives the name of the newspaper company and occasionally the amount paid to it.
