Resolution. Permitting the inhabitants to employ Indian brokers in the Indian trade this year.

Trial of Marten, the mason, for wounding Peter Jacobsen Bosboom, with his cutlass, near the guard house; defendant pleads provocation, inasmuch as Bosbom had called him a liar; continued.

Action. Andries de Vos agst. Paulus Lendersen (van der Grist) for payment of boards sold him at the Manhattans; defendant pleads that he had purchased them for the city of New Amsterdam, and protests against being sued in the court at Fort Orange in violation of privilege of great burgher right, granted to said city; judgment for plaintiff; defendant appeals.

Action. The sheriff agst. Frans Barentsen Pastoor, for an assault on Jacobus Teunissen with a knife; fined 100 guilders.

Propositions of the three Mohawk castles, renewing the ancient covenant chain; requesting, in case they go to war against the Sinnekeus, that they might be permitted to bring their wives and children to Fort Orange; also, requesting guns to defend their castles and horses to draw palisades thither.

Proceedings of an extraordinary court for the trial of an action. Peter Jacobsen, plaintiff, agst. Cornelis Vos, for the payment of 29 beavers; judgment for plaintiff; (20th) bail entered by Rutger Jacobsen and Gerrit Bancker for any fine that may be imposed Juriaen Jansen.

Various actions of debt. Permission to Rutger Jacobsen to use a sloop which he sold to Harmon Jacobsen, an absconding debtor, and which is under attachment; minute that iron work, furnished to the church by Peter Maecker, is accepted in payment of his subscription towards the erection of that building. The sheriff agst. Peter Bronk on a summons to inform the court what Christians he had seen in the woods trading with Indians; refuses to tell; case postponed.

Action of debt. Dirck Keyser agst. John Roelofsen, for payment of 13 beavers; judgment for plaintiff on his swearing to the correctness of his account.

Action of damages. Goosen Gerritsen agst. Jurriaen Jansen, for having circulated a report that he was betrothed to Annetie Lievens, the plaintiff's bride; defendant acknowledges circulating the report and its falsehood, but pleads that he had been instigated thereto by Cornelis Teunissen; ordered to prove this allegation. Appointment of Sander Leendertsen and Peter Hartgers to appraise wampum, paid Leendert Pietersen by Daniel Rinckhout.

Appointment of Hendrick Bierman to be receiver of the excise; sundry actions of debt; the sheriff agst. Jacob Loockermans, for having assaulted Meuwes Hoogenboom, and split his face open from his forehead to his under lip with his knife; fined 300 guilders and further to pay for loss of time, board and surgical attendance; confession of Juriaen Jansen that the statement he made respecting an engagement between himself and Goosen Gerritsen's bride was false; asks pardon; granted.

Affidavit. Of Johannes La Montagne, Philip Pietersen Schuyler, Jan Tomassen, magistrates, and Hendrick Jochemsen, lieutenant of the burgher company, that Marten Bierkaecker, on the south side of the town limits, had sold brandy to a Mohawk Indian.

Examination. Of Martin Bierkaecker and Susanna, his wife, on interrogatories respecting the above charge.

Sundry actions for debt, (20th). Goosen Gerritsen agst. Teunis Cornelissen and Marretje his wife, for behaving insolently in his house; put over. The sheriff agst. Susannah Jansen, wife of Martin Bierkaecker, for having sold liquor to an Indian; pleads in extenuation her extreme poverty, and that her husband is incapacitated from work by a hernia on both sides; proceedings dropped.

Actions. Mr. Van Hamel, secretary of Renselaerswyck agst. Lambert van Valkenburgh, for loss sustained in the sale of a field of wheat on the farm of Jan Labité which he had purchased at auction, and which had to be resold for non-payment of purchase-money; judgment for plaintiff with costs and damages. Jan Bemboo agst. Teunis Jacobsen, beer carrier, for loss of wine which he let fall from the beer yoke; put over; judgment subsequently for defendant; actions of debt.

Action. The sheriff agst. Hendrick Andriessen, for standing in the middle of the street at ten o'clock at night with a drawn cutlass in his hand.

Action of slander. Ulderick Kleyn agst. Eldert Gerbertsen, for stating that his wife had been whipped and branded on the scaffold at Amsterdam; defendant pleads provocation, having been abused by the woman; put over. Report of referees in favor of a claim of Femmetje de Baxter agst. Michael Teunissen.

Actions for debt and for slander; sentence of Jannetje, wife of Evert the baker, for violation of the ordinances of the city of Amsterdam, fol. 162; to beg pardon of God and the court, in presence of the latter; to lock up her store for six weeks; to pay a fine of 250 guilders, with costs, and to remain in prison until judgment be satisfied.

Petition of Volckert Jansen, Jacob Schermerhoorn, Philip Pietersen (Schuyler), Leendert Philipsen, Jan van Aken, Jan Thomassen Aernout Cornelissen, Gerrit Slechtenhorst, Jan Mangelsen, Peter van Alen, Mathias Jansen, Dirck Jansen Croon, Gysbert Jansen, Abraham Staets, Lambert Albertsen, Hans Hendricksen, Teunis Cornelissen, William Teller, Ariaen Gerritsen, Carsten Fredricksen, Barent Meyndertsen, William Brouwer, Barent Jansen, Laurens van Alen and Davit Schuyler, on behalf of the commonalty legally assembled, praying that no Christian brokers be allowed to roam through the woods, and that Indian brokers only be allowed in the Indian trade.

Ordinance. Directing that in future no brokers be allowed in the Indian trade, but that the Indians be allowed to offer their beavers for sale in town wherever they please.

William Teller, for having called them a rabble; defendant denies the allegation, but admits having said that things would be in a miserable condition if he or the common people or rabble were to stand up against the laws of the magistrates, or make laws against their rulers; case put over.

Complaint against Jan Harmsen for going to the Mohawk road in the woods to lure the Indians to trade; examination of the accused.

Sentence in the above case; accused fined 300 guilders with costs, and suspension from trade during two months.

Complaint against Volckert Jansen, William Brouwer, Jan van Aken and others, for having employed an Indian to bring other Indians to sell their furs to them; defendants having denied the charge upon oath, are discharged.

Action. Adriaen Jansen from Leyden, agst. Wynant Gerritsen (Van de Poel), attorney of the widow of Abraham Vosburg, for delivery of a sawmill; judgment for plaintiff.

Order, at the request of the commonalty, permitting the inhabitants of the town to employ Indian brokers.

Minute. Presentation of a petition praying that the Indian trade may be free, and that Dutch as well as Indian brokers may be employed.

Petition. Jan Dircksen van Bremen, Arent Jansen van Hoeck, Jan Harmsen, Rem Jansen, Lambert van Valckenburgh, Jan Jansen van Eeckelen, Peter Winne, Cornelis Bogardus, Philip Hendricksen, Hendrick Roseboom, Wynant Gerritsen van de Poel and divers others, praying that Dutch as well as Indian brokers may be employed to trade with the Indians.

Order on the above petition, permitting the petitioners to act as in their discretion they may think fit, as some of them had openly avowed their intention to do so whether it was allowed or not.

Proposals of the Senecas renewing the covenant chain; requesting that brokers be not employed in the Indian trade; complaining of ill usage; desiring that they may be allowed to sell their goods to whomsoever they please, and remonstrating against French Indians coming to the Cohoes to trade with the Mohegans.

Answer to the above propositions.

Action. Dirck Jansen Croon, superintendent of wells, agst. David Pietersen and Gysbert Jansen, for their share of the expense in constructing a public well, amounting to 25 guilders each; judgment for plaintiff.

Action of slander. Isaac de Haen agst. Jacob Tysen, for charging him with having kept false books; fined 28 guilders. Complaint against Philip Hendricksen, for dangerously wounding Philip Visbeeck in the arm with a cutlass; put over.

Complaint against Adriaen Jansen from Leyden, for sending an Indian broker into the woods to trade with Indians, and for taking beavers from a squaw by force and thrusting her out of doors; case put over.

Complaint against Hendrick Andriessen for assault and battery on Lysbet, wife of Gerrit Bancker; put over.

Actions for debt. (14th.) Complaint against Lambert Albertsen van Neck for opposing the collection of the chimney tax. Complaint against Jurriaen Theunesen for beating some of the magistrates at Mrs. Dyckrnan's house, and for abusing the worshipful court; defendant pleads gross intoxication; fined 30 guilders, with costs. Complaint against Cornelis Theunissen Bosch for sending a Dutch broker to the woods after Indians. Complaint against Hendrick de Backer for bringing in a load of hay on Sunday, about the third tolling of the bell; fined 12 guilders, with costs.

Jochern Kittelheym, for detaining her wagon and for an assault committed, on plaintiff by defendant's wife; put over. Judgment for plaintiff in the case of Daniel Rinckhout agst.
