Administrative History

Judgments made by community courts were subject to appeal before the Council of the Colony of New York. Writs of appeal were granted by the council in response to petitions, usually submitted by one party in a civil action. The writ ordered the court messenger to summon the petitioner and representatives of the lower court to appear before the council on an appointed date to review the case.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of writs of appeal from judgments made by the courts of New Amsterdam, Oostdurp (Westchester), Heemsteede, New Amstel, Wiltwyck (in the Esopus), Flushing (on Long Island), and Fort Orange. The records also include summonses and writs of mandamus. The council's decisions on these appeals appear in the council minutes (see record series A1809, Dutch Colonial Council Minutes).
