Scope and Content Note

Lists were compiled annually on or about October 1 of all inmates present at the institution or on parole.

A list entry for each inmate contains admission date or date returned from parole; name; inmate number; division to which assigned (occasionally); and book and page number of Chaplain's Registers where inmate's history is recorded (not after June 1899).

Infrequently, a date entry is annotated to show that an inmate escaped, died, or was discharged. Often no date is entered or there is merely a check mark, indicating that the inmate remained in the institution. Entries with checks or blanks in earlier years are often re-listed in later years with a parole date.

These lists were used to compile statistics on inmates "on roster" (present), paroled, or escaped for the institution's annual reports.
