Arrangement
Chronological by date received in school division, which sometimes differs from the date of admission to the institution.
Scope and Content Note
These volumes contain the following information for each male inmate: name; age; date reviewed for school placement; occupation (volume 1 only); if ignorant of alphabet; if can spell easy words; if can read easy lessons; if reads imperfectly, readily, or fluently; if unacquainted with arithmetic; religion (volumes 1 and 2 only); present advancement in arithmetic (e.g., "addition", "fractions", "nothing"); if has some knowledge of geography, history, grammar; if can write his name; class entered (grade level); if attended Sabbath school; if can repeat the Lord's prayer; if can repeat a passage of scripture (volume 1 only); if uses profanity; if uses tobacco and/or alcohol; and remarks about health and habits of inmate's parents, inmate's reading and writing ability, transfers between 1st and 2nd division schools, religion, or other comments.
Volume 1, for the period from January 16, 1879 to May 19, 1883, includes only name, age, date received, and present advancement in arithmetic. Volume 2, for the dates that overlap with Volume 1, lists the same inmates and provides all of the information omitted from 1879 to 1883 in Volume 1.
Volume 3 also contains carbon typescripts of some Board of Classification meeting minutes dating from April 4 to November 21, 1893. These minutes relate to the creation of four school divisions and inmate assignments to them. A complete set of minutes is in series A1964, Minutes of the Board of Classification.
