Scope and Content Note
This register tracks the hiring, salary, performance, and departure of officials and employees of the institution.
For each employee, the register provides: name; address (sometimes); date of application for job (recorded April 1883-August 1894 only); position (nurse, watchman, teacher, assistant superintendent, etc.); reference: name and address (from April 1883 on); date of appointment; salary or wages; date of retirement (i.e. date of departure for any reason); and remarks, such as manner of and reason for leaving (e.g. "Resigned"; "Discharged for intemperance"), character (e.g. "Efficient and trustworthy"), and salary increases and dates. Although the register was begun in 1883, employees hired previously were listed at the beginning of volume.
Custodial History
The Department of Correction placed these records on loan to the Syracuse University Library from 1960-1977.
