Scope and Content Note

These volumes contain a record of images accepted for use in the loan collection of educational lantern slides. Each negative received was assigned a preliminary number (preceded by an "X"), and a test lantern slide was made and assigned the same preliminary number. If the image was accepted for use in the loan collection it was assigned a negative number, classified by subject and assigned a call number, and entered in the accession register.

Each entry in the registers provides the following information about the image: negative number (size of the negative corresponds to alphabetic prefix: "A" = 6 1/2" by 8 1/2", "B" = 5" by 7", "C" = 4" by 5", "D" = 11" by 14", and no alphabetic prefix = 8" by 10"); call number; title; location; date negative was made; source and maker of negative; date negative was acquired; preliminary number ("makers number"); size of negative; and name of maker of colored sample. If an image was withdrawn from use the register entry is annotated "DO NOT USE"; if the negative was destroyed, the entry is annotated to this effect. If a colored sample slide was made, the entry is annotated with the name of the person or institution who colored the sample. Some entries are also annotated with the study or list number in which the slide appeared, cross references to other images substituted for the original, and notes regarding the loss or breakage of the negative.
