Summary:
Staff of the Governor's office maintained this index to facilitate access to governors' correspondence files. The series indexes portions of three series: 1) Appointment Correspondence Files (series A0612), indexing files from 1907-1928; 2) Central Subject and Correspondence Files (series 13682), indexing files of Governor Alfred E. Smith; and 3) Investigation Case Files of Charges and Complaints Against Public Officials and Agencies (series A0531), indexing case files from about 1907-1920.

Staff of the Governor's office maintained this index to facilitate access to governors' correspondence files.

The series indexes portions of three series: 1) Appointment Correspondence Files (series A0612), indexing files of governors Charles Evans Hughes (1907-1910), Horace White (1910), John A. Dix (1911-1912), Martin H. Glynn (1913-1914), Charles S. Whitman (1915-1918), and Nathan L. Miller (1921-1922); 2) Central Subject and Correspondence Files (series 13682), indexing files of Governor Alfred E. Smith (1919-1920, 1923-1928); and 3) Investigation Case Files of Charges and Complaints Against Public Officials and Agencies (series A0531), indexing case files from about 1907-1920.

Each index card provides: name of the correspondent and/or the subject of the correspondence; name of the governor and/or the years of his administration; and file code number of the file in which the indexed item is located.

A3218-07: This accretion consists of carbon copies of letters sent from Governor Averell Harriman's office, which served as a name index to his subject and correspondence files (series 13682). Each file is arranged alphabetically by the last name of the addressee. Some of the names of note include Dwight Eisenhower, Harry Truman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mahatma Gandhi, and Nelson Rockefeller.

Custodial History

A3218-07: This accretion was transferred to Syracuse University in 1959 by Governor Harriman, and was later transferred to the New York State Archives in 2006. It was accessioned in November 2007.
