Scope and Content Note
Most of the documents in this series are military appeals addressed to Adjutant General Nicholas F. Beck or to Governors Martin Van Buren and Enos T. Throop. The appeals mostly concern disputed elections of officers in the various units of the New York State Militia. There are also a few statistical abstracts of inspection returns, which give numbers of officers and enlisted men present and absent, as well as the quality of arms and accoutrements, cannon and equipment, implements for loading and firing, and ammunition inspected and approved or found unfit for service.
Related Material
Series B0462, Correspondence and Petitions to the Adjutant General, 1821-1896, contains similar appeals to the Adjutant General.
Custodial History
The appeals were found among the "motion papers" filed in the Albany office of the old Supreme Court of Judicature.
