Scope and Content Note

This is an unannotated copy of a map of New York State designed and published by the Department of Commerce to display scenic, economic, and historic sites of interest in the state. As the predecessor to the Department of Economic Development, the Commerce Department was charged with promoting and advertising attractions to aid the economic development of the state.

Although the map has a number "42" written on the back, neither the number's significance nor the purpose for which the map was kept is known.

The map features picture icons locating significant natural features, state parks, and scenic areas; private and state operated recreation/visitor sites; and historic sites, museums, and significant public buildings. There are two text blocks on the map face. One by State Historian Albert B. Corey summarizes state history from colonial times; the other gives an overview of natural and recreational features, of state economic development and leadership, and a description of state insignia. The map also presents an insert aerial view of New York City showing points of interest there.

The laminated color print map is entitled "New York The Empire State" and carries a ruled scale and the names of the Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Director of State Publicity. It was drawn by the General Drafting Company, and internal information dates it between 1946 and 1955. The map measures 74 x 97 cm within neat lines.
