Scope and Content Note
This series includes manuscript drafts of New York State Adjutant General Franklin Townsend's annual reports to the governor for the years 1876, 1877, and 1878. The reports include overall summaries of the condition of the New York National Guard, accounts of changes in the organization of the Guard, accounts of training exercises, accounts of notable events in which the Guard was involved, updates regarding war claims of New York State against the federal government, updates regarding outstanding claims of War of 1812 veterans, and concluding remarks.
The series also includes a number of fiscal documents, likewise drafted for inclusion in the annual reports. Such documents relate to annual appropriations and expenditures of the Military Department, the uniform and equipment fund, current balance of the military fund, payments made to officers such as the Commissary General and Director of Ordinance, and accounts of daily Military Department receipts and disbursements.
