Summary:

This series consists of two bound volumes compiled by Medical agents assigned to the Washington office of the New York Military Agency. The registers date between February, 1865 and September, 1866. Volume one relates mainly to the processing of soldiers' claims for back pay, invalid pensions, or other monetary concerns. Volume two records claims of soldiers in hospitals applying for discharges, transfers, or furloughs.

Arranged by medical agent and therein chronologically by date of claim.

Scope and Content Note

Volume 1: Information provided for each entry in Volume One consists of claimant's name, rank, company, and regiment; usually his residence; description of claim; lists of actions taken to process the claim; and usually a notation concerning the final settlement.

Volume 2: The title page states that this is a "Record of Cases of applicants for discharge, transfer, etc., by James A. Hall, Med. Agent, State N.Y., From February 1st, 1865." The volume is indeed a "record of... applications for discharge..." but it was not compiled by James A. Hall. Hall may have begun the volume but the bulk of the volume was probably compiled by W.W. Potter, who succeeded Hall as New York's medical agent in Washington, or by one his clerks. Each entry in volume two provides date; soldier's name; occasionally rank; regiment and company; usually name of hospital located in; soldier's request (discharge, transfer, and furloughs); and remarks. The remarks usually refer to actions taken by the medical bureau to process the soldier's request. Occasionally final disposition of the case is recorded.
