Administrative History

It is unclear exactly how these volumes came into the State's possesion.

They may have been forwarded to the Adjutant General, who then transferred them to the State Library. In 1978, the State Library transferred the volumes to the State Archives. A second possibility is that the records could have been donated to the Bureau of Military Statistics. In 1911 and 1912 the Adjutant General's Office transferred numerous items collected by the bureau to the State Library.

Scope and Content Note

These four volumes contain descriptive lists; names and addresses of ex-members of the regiment; and general and special orders.

The first volume is a descriptive list of the Twenty Second Regiment of New York Volunteers. The list provides company; rank; name; age; height; complexion; eye and hair color; place of birth (town or county and state); occupation; date of enlistment; place of enlistment; by whom enlisted; length of enlistment; and remarks. The remarks usually provide information on wounds received, transfers, discharges, deaths, promotions, muster out dates, and resignations. The beginning of the volume contains a list of the regiment's commissioned officers and provides name, rank, date of appointment, and remarks.

Volume two appears to be an address book of ex-members of the Twenty Second Regiment. It provides name, address, county, and state. Occasionally, references pertaining to deaths are recorded.

Volumes three and four contain copies of general and special orders, instructions, and circulars issued by brigade, division, and army commanders to the regiment. The orders usually pertain to routine administrative procedures such as issuance of rations, resignations, promotions, details for courts-martial, inspections, details for picket duty, and furloughs.
