Scope and Content Note

This series contains copies of cards (WPA form 22 HR) compiled for the American Imprints Inventory, a project under the Historical Records Survey.

The cards give basic cataloging data on books and pamphlets printed in the United States before 1877. They were compiled by field workers who surveyed most public and private institutional libraries in New York State. The original cards were sent to the National Editor of the American Imprints Inventory, where checklists of imprints were planned and prepared. Each card gives the following information about one imprint: author; title; publisher; place of publication; date; dimensions; number of pages; edition; repository (indicated by an alphabetic "symbol" or unique identifier); general stack location in repository; and an occasional note about physical condition as characteristics of the imprint.
