Scope and Content Note
This series consists of 3" x 5" cards typed in preparation for compiling a complete name and subject index to the Gazetteer of the State of New York by J. H. French, published in 1860.
Each card contains a single name or subject entry and a page reference. Entries include personal names, political subdivision names, geographic feature names, subjects named in the text and newspaper titles. Although cards were prepared for the entire volume, they were never alphabetized.

French's Gazetteer includes a "geographical index." Personal names are indexed in Index of Personal Names in J. H. French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860), compiled by Frank Place, II (Cortland, N.Y. : 1962).
Custodial History
These records were transferred to the State Library at an unknown date. Subsequently, they were transferred to the Archives as boxes 39-45 of old collection #551, accession number -372.
