Scope and Content Note

This series contains copies of contracts made by the Prison Agent with various individuals and firms for the mining and manufacturing of iron and nails, and the making of barrel hoops, boots and shoes, and other products of prison industry, giving detailed provisions concerning the employment of prison labor in these enterprises. Laws of 1847 empowered the Prison Agent to make contracts for the labor of prisoners.
