Scope and Content Note

This series provides a record of cash disbursements and receipts that was kept by treasurers of the institution in accordance with Chapter 587 of the Laws of 1865, which established the institution and required that full and complete records be kept. The volume's binding carries the title "Cash Book No. 2." Beginning entires in the volume are carried over from "Cash Book No. 1," the location of which is unknown.

Information recorded in the volume includes the date, description, and amount of each transaction as well as check number for disbursements. Cash receipts include those from the superintendent of the school, the state, and various counties. Disbursements include those for salaries, food, and medical household supplies. Entries are totaled at the bottom of each page and balances are carried forward.

The front fly leaf of the volume carries a manuscript inscription giving the title "Treasurer's Cash Book" and listing the names of the five treasurers of the institution responsible for the accounting, along with the dates (found within the volume) at which their respective tenures began. That date marks the time at which the trasurer's bond was accepted by the state treasurer and the account of the previous institution trasurer was transferred and balanced.

The five institution trasurers responsible for the accounting in this volume and the beginning dates are as follows: H.U. Howard, Esq. (March 2, 1882); Gorton Bentley (?) Esq. (May 24, 1883); Hon. Eli Taylor (June 5, 1886); S. Masse (August 10, 1887); and G.S. Griswold (February 29, 1888).
