Administrative History

Ersa H. Poston was appointed Regional Director of the New York State Youth Commission in 1957 and continued in that capacity when the State Division for Youth superseded the Youth Commission in 1960. Poston directed the agency's operations in New York City, Long Island, and the counties of Westchester, Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Delaware, Greene, and Columbia. In 1963, Poston was appointed to the position of Youth and Work Coordinator, with responsibility for overseeing the Division's statewide program of work training for high school dropouts.

Scope and Content Note

Ersa H. Poston compiled the records in this series while serving as Regional Director and later Youth and Work Coordinator for the Division for Youth. The records directly reflect the Division's mission and pertain to functions such as: the administration of projects focusing on community organization, education, recreation, policing, psychological and social casework, and other related youth services; the compilation and analysis of data regarding juvenile delinquency and the treatment of adolescents with anti-social behavior; the recruitment of staff to participate in youth services programs; and the development and implementation of programs designed to improve the employability of secondary school dropouts.

Custodial History

The Division for Youth transferred these records to the State Archives in 1984. They were accessioned in conjunction with a project undertaken by Archives staff in 2004 to describe or integrate estrayed or unidentified records.
