Administrative History
In July 1907, the Adjutant General issued Circular No. 11, which declared that the State of New York would reimburse veterans of the Spanish-American War with monies appropriated by the United States government. Veterans of New York National Guard infantry and cavalry units that served during the month of May 1898 were eligible to receive the refund; New Yorkers who served in Regular Army units, conversely, were unable to apply.
Scope and Content Note
This series consists of a ledger volume that records payments made to Spanish-American War veterans of New York National Guard infantry and cavalry units, specifically the First, Second, Third, Eighth, Ninth, Twelfth, Fourteenth, Twenty-Second, Forty-Seventh, Sixty-Fifth, Sixty-Ninth, and Seventy-First infantry organizations, and Troops A and C of the state's cavalry forces.
The following data is provided by each ledger entry: regiment and company (date of mustering of the unit is often written at top of page), soldier's grade, name, dates of service in 1898, number of days served, U.S. pay rate, deduction for pay date of muster (if applicable), refund amount, when claim was filed, when voucher was forwarded, payment information (includes check number and date paid), and remarks (if applicable).
