Scope and Content Note
This series consists of a six-volume register recording offenses and subsequent punishments given to individuals incarcerated at Auburn Prison during the period 1873 to 1941. Information on each punishment given is listed together in an entry for the particular individual. For each individual, the register includes: name; date received; crime; term of sentence; sentencing judge; and date discharged or transferred from Auburn. For each instance of punishment, the register includes: date; name of keeper; description and location of offense; name of person giving punishment; and description of punishment.
The registers are arranged roughly by date of first punishment and are thereby impossible to search by name. In order to record subsequent punishments, prison officials must have had access to a name index referring them to the date of first punishment. Apparently such an index no longer exists.
