Scope and Content Note

This series consists of two volumes of the Clinton Prison voucher register (sometimes known as a voucher abstract). Volume 1 covers January 1848 to September 1851; Volume 2 covers October 1851 to December 1873 (with a gap from July to November 1873). This record consists of a chronological list of all vouchers paid by the prison agent in response to invoices received from contractors.

Entries were made in the register as vouchers were prepared listing the sequential number of the voucher, the name of the agent issuing the voucher, the names of the contractors being paid, and a description of the goods and services supplied. A new sequence of vouchers was begun every October 1st. The register also contains a running total of the voucher amounts paid.
