Summary:
This series consists of the Clinton Prison physician's log of daily, monthly, and yearly totals of information on the Clinton inmate population. Information includes inmate count; number discharged, died, transferred or received, applied for medical treatment, treated, not treated, excused, and days excused; and names of inmates who attempted escape, escaped or recaptured; died; transferred or were received from other prisons. Also included is a log of meals served and average cost per meal.

Scope and Content Note

This series consists of a one-volume log kept by the Clinton Prison physician from October 1898 to September 1901. The log includes daily, monthly, and yearly totals of information on the Clinton inmate population.

This information consists of: count of inmates; number of inmates discharged, died, transferred (to Matteawan, Sing Sing, or Auburn), received (from the courts, Sing Sing, or Auburn), applying for medical treatment, treated, not treated, excused, days excused, and treated after morning call; and daily notes: names of inmates who attempted to escape, escaped or who were recaptured, names of inmates who died or were transferred; and number of inmates received from other prisons.

The volume also includes a two-page log of meals served in the prison hospital during the period. Divided roughly into ten-day periods, this log lists the total number of meals, total cost, amounts of food used (beef, sugar, butter, eggs), and average cost per meal.
