Scope and Content Note

This series consists of audio tape recordings and transcripts of public hearings of the New York State Special Commission on Attica (McKay Commission). Audio tape recordings are present for hearings held on April 12, 13, and 14, 1972. Transcripts are present for the following dates only (all in 1972): April 5, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 20, 24, 26, 27, 28, May 10. Transcripts document public hearing testimony before the commission of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, Robert R. Douglass (secretary to the governor), T. Norman Hurd (Director of State Operations), Major General A.C. O'Hara (military chief of staff to the governor), Howard Shapiro (first assistant counsel to the governor), and Michael Whiteman (counsel to the governor).

One tape contains highlights from news media coverage of hearings on April 24 and 26, 1972. Witnesses recorded on these tapes include State Assemblyman Arthur O. Eve, Lynn Johnson (correction officer and hostage), William Kunstler (attorney for prisoners involved in uprising), State Senator John Dunne, Russel Oswald (Commissioner of the State Department of Correctional Services), and Walter Dunbar (Deputy Commissioner of the State Department of Correctional Services). There are no transcripts in this accretion.
