Scope and Content Note
This series consists of account journals documenting expenses and payments for construction of the State Lunatic Asylum at Utica . Information given for each payment includes name of account; a note indicating what payment is for (usually type of labor or material supplied); amount paid; check number; and a page or account number indicating location where the entry is recorded in a separate account ledger.
B1496-97: This accretion consists of one accounting journal (1844-1846) which documents expenses for construction of new buildings at the State Lunatic Asylum. In 1844, the legislature approved additional funds for enlargement of the State Lunatic Asylum grounds and erection of additional buildings (Laws of 1844, Chapter 337).
Expenses are recorded for a variety of material, labor, and services. Material listed includes lumber, bricks, glass, joists, and roof timbers. Labor includes excavation, blacksmithing, stone cutting, masonry work, carpentry, framing, and foundation work. Services listed include superintending and visiting the work in progress. Date, recipient, item, and amount is shown for each expense recorded.
