Administrative History

The Commission on Cultural Resources was created to study the current and long range needs of cultural institutions in New York State following an emergency appropriation of $18 million to assist faltering institutions. Senater Willam T. Conklin was chairman. Proceedings took place at the initiative of (and were partly conducted by) Robert J. Maurer, Executive Director of the Commission. The commission subsequently recommended a permanent program of state support and warned of an impending cultural depression if state and private funds were not continued.

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of reel-to-reel audiotapes of hearings, forums, and public meetings conducted by the commission. Tape boxes are numbered consecutively with gaps; other labeled information includes reel number, date, and location of meeting (usually). Contents of the hearing or meeting tape are not given.

Published reports of the commission, which may be based in part on these hearings, are available at the New York State Library.

B1513-04: This accretion consists of audio tapes documenting various public hearings held by the commission throughout the state between 1970 and 1971. The contents of tapes are unknown and many duplicates are included. The labels of some of the tapes suggest that they are duplicates of tapes initially accessioned by the State Archives in 1997 (B1513-97). The name "Conklin" appears on a few tapes and refers to Senator William T. Conklin who chaired the commission during this period.

B1513-97: These audiotapes were transferred without accessioning or processing documentation to the State Archives from the State Library, Manuscripts and Special Collections, in February 1997.
