Arrangement

Arranged by institution and therein in reverse chronological order.

Scope and Content Note

The series consists of transmittal letters, some containing summary reporting data on admissions and discharges, and a few notices of discharge of individual inmates. The records were sent by superintendents of various county almshouses to the State Board of Charities as required by law. Many are handwritten on institutional letterhead and signed by the superintendent. Many carry a date stamp showing receipt by the State Board of Charities.

Institutions represented include the New York City Farm Colony (census for February 1903-December 1904); Richmond County Almshouse (census for December 1900-May 1903, discharges for 1900); Rockland County Almshouse (transmittal letters only, 1913); and the Home for ther Aged and Infirm of Brooklyn Division (transmittal letters only 1907-1914).

This accession resulted from a project undertaken by Archives staff in 1997 to accession or reintegrate estrayed or unidentified records.
